Liberia Airport to La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano: Transfer Guide

Arenal Volcano at sunset with Lake Arenal, Costa Rica

Arenal Volcano and the town of La Fortuna are among Costa Rica's most iconic destinations — and the drive from Liberia Airport is one of the most scenic routes in the country.

The Route

From Liberia Airport, La Fortuna is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by road. The drive crosses the Guanacaste plains, climbs through the central highlands, and winds down into the volcanic valley where Arenal rises dramatically on the horizon.

Total distance: ~210 kilometers

The drive passes through Cañas, crosses the Arenal reservoir (stunning views), and descends into La Fortuna with the volcano directly ahead. On a clear day, this final stretch is one of the most memorable drives in all of Central America.

About La Fortuna & Arenal

Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica's most iconic natural landmark — a near-perfect stratovolcano that rises 1,670 meters above the surrounding rainforest. While the last major eruption cycle was in 1968, Arenal remains an active volcano with regular steam venting visible from town.

La Fortuna is the gateway town: a well-organized, tourist-friendly hub with excellent hotels (from budget to luxury), restaurants, and tour operators. From here you can:

  • Soak in natural hot springs fed by volcanic heat (La Fortuna Waterfall and Tabacón are the best-known)
  • Hike the Arenal Volcano National Park trails
  • Take a hanging bridges canopy walk through the rainforest
  • Kayak or stand-up paddleboard on Lake Arenal
  • White-water raft the Toro River

La Fortuna pairs exceptionally well with a Guanacaste beach stay — many visitors spend a few days at the beach, then 2–3 nights at Arenal before flying home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the drive from Liberia to Arenal difficult?+
Not with a professional driver who knows the route. For self-driving, the mountain sections require attentiveness, and the road around Lake Arenal has some narrow curves. For a first-time visitor, a private shuttle is much more comfortable.
Can I combine Guanacaste and Arenal in one trip?+
Absolutely. Many travelers fly into LIR, head to Arenal first, then spend the second half of the trip at a Guanacaste beach. We can arrange transfers for both legs.
Is there anything to see on the drive?+
The drive through the highlands and along Lake Arenal is genuinely scenic. On a clear day you'll see the volcano from about 30 minutes out. Many guests comment that the drive itself is part of the experience.
