Tamarindo to Rincón de la Vieja & Río Celeste: Transfer Guide

Rincón de la Vieja National Park and the Río Celeste waterfall are two of Guanacaste's most spectacular natural attractions — both accessible within about 2 hours from Tamarindo, Flamingo, or Papagayo.
Two Destinations, One Volcanic Region
Rincón de la Vieja National Park sits in the Guanacaste mountain range north of Liberia. The park covers an active volcanic complex with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools, sulphur springs, and waterfalls. Hiking trails range from easy walks to strenuous volcano summit routes. The park is also excellent for wildlife — tapirs, peccaries, and hundreds of bird species.

Río Celeste is inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, a short distance from Rincón. The river runs a vivid turquoise-blue color, caused by a chemical reaction where two colorless streams mix — aluminum silicate particles refract the light in a way that makes the water appear an impossible, almost surreal blue. The main attraction is the Río Celeste waterfall, reached via a 2-hour round-trip hike through the rainforest.

The Drive
From Tamarindo, Flamingo, or Papagayo, the drive to Rincón de la Vieja or Río Celeste takes approximately 2 hours by private transfer. The route heads north and inland from the coast, rising through the dry Guanacaste highlands before entering the volcanic cloud forest zone near the park.
The main roads are paved; the final stretches to park entrances involve some unpaved road that is manageable year-round with a proper vehicle.
Day Trip vs. Overnight
Both Rincón de la Vieja and Río Celeste are popular day trips from Tamarindo — the 2-hour drive each way makes for a long but doable day. Many lodges and tour operators in Tamarindo offer guided day trips.
For those wanting more time, there are excellent eco-lodges near the park entrances. Staying overnight lets you explore both parks, visit the hot springs, and enjoy the area at a relaxed pace.
